What age group?

You must decide from the outset whether you want to specialise in primary or high school as this will dictate which B Ed programme you study. The following indicates which phase links with which age group and the relevant B Ed programme:

  • B Ed Foundation Phase (B Ed FP) for teaching Grades 0-3;
  • B Ed Intermediate Phase (B Ed IP) for teaching Grades 4-6; and
  • B Ed Further Education & Training (B Ed FET) for teaching Grades 10-12.
Will I get to practise in schools?
Yes, all the teaching qualifications at Nelson Mandela University integrate theory with practice. The Faculty has long-standing partnerships with schools in the Nelson Mandela Metropole and we work closely together to ensure a balanced curriculum.
What are the admission requirements?
The minimum entry requirements for the B Ed degree are explained in the relevant pages in the online prospectus for further details.
What will it cost per year?

When must I apply?

It is advisable to get your completed Nelson Mandela University Admissions Application Form in before end August of the year prior to your first year of study. It is important to ensure all required documentation is attached to your application - any omissions will hold up your application process.

The B Ed programmes have limited capacity, so it is advisable to get your application in early.

What is the Funza Lushaka Bursary?
Funza Lushaka service - obligation bursaries are bursaries that are provided to the Education students by the Department of Basic Education annually.
Who is eligible for the bursary?
Only students who have already been provisionally admitted or admitted into the B Ed programme or PGCE can apply.
When can I apply for the bursary?

New Applications close in January, 11, 2019.

The Department of Basic Education will only consider registered students for selection.

When will I know if my applying was successful or not?

The outcome of the selection process will be available from the University not later than April 30, 2019.

What is the Matthew Goniwe Bursary?
Teacher Education Bursary from the Eastern Cape Dept. of Education.
What is the criteria for the bursary?
  • Unemployed youth between the ages of 18-35 years.
  • Only applicants who are residing fulltime in the Eastern Cape will be considered.
  • Only prospective BEd and PGCE student will be considered.
What does the bursary cover?
  • Registration fees
  • Tuition fees and study material
  • Residence fees and food allowances
