Foundation Phase
This programme aims to provide prospective student teachers with the required knowledge, understanding and skills to enhance teaching and learning in all Foundation Phase subjects (Languages, Mathematics and Life Skills). Our programme emphasises mother-tongue based learning, hands-on classroom competencies and the effective use of teaching and learning media. The programme integrates various theoretical, disciplinary, and pedagogical content knowledges, along with the practical application(s) thereof. This happens through diverse school-based learning opportunities for observation and practical teaching within multi-lingual contexts.
The Foundation Phase building on the Missionvale Campus is a space that will ignite and uncover the potential of student teachers, and researchers to better understand, appreciate and create new meaning while reflecting upon the world around them.
Our programme is aimed at equipping committed students and scholars who will go on to become quality Foundation Phase teachers at schools throughout the Eastern Cape and beyond.
